Cathedral of Otranto
In the very center of the ancient village, stands one of the architectural wonders not only of Otranto, but of the whole Salento: the Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata.
It is not just a simple church or just a beautiful place of worship to see and admire, but an extraordinary historical testimony to the life of the city, an artistic treasure of absolute value, and also a symbol of Christianity because of the events that took place within its walls.Arriving in Basilica Square, we are faced with a clean, linear structure, far from the thousand frills of Salento Baroque. In fact, the Cathedral dates back to the second half of the year 1000, and was built on ancient remains of Messapian, Roman and early Christian villages.
Palascia Lighthouse
Today, the Punta Palascia lighthouse is one of five lighthouses in the Mediterranean Sea protected by the European Commission. Also located nearby is the Multimedia Museum of the Sea, where tourists can explore the local fauna and flora.
The lighthouse can also be visited from the inside, and you have the option of climbing to the top via the spiral staircase of about 150 steps to reach the main attraction: the lantern.
The lighthouse was built in 1867 and abandoned in the 1970s; however, it was reopened in 2008 and has since housed the Center for the Environment and Health of Mediterranean Ecosystems and a Multimedia Museum of the Sea.
The Dolmen An area with a history of thousands of years if we consider that the making of the dolmens is placed in the time span from the end of the 5th millennium B.C. to the end of the 3rd millennium B.C,
Porto Badisco also known as "Aeneas's Landing" (according to legend, it was the first port in Italy where Aeneas landed after his epic escape from Troy) constitutes a safe haven for local fishermen's boats and a favorite destination for tourists and wayfarers.
